Professional Experience

Bob Ryan has over seventeen years of experience in tax planning and law. Bob works with individuals, families and small business owners to determine their goals in order to develop a comprehensive estate plan that will allow them to enjoy their wealth during life, as well as plan for administration of the assets upon death or incapacity. Bob also has assisted a number of families administer an estate or trust after the death of a loved one and has assisted in the resolution of interfamily disputes that occasionally arise during such a stressful event.  


Prior to joining Bove & Langa, P.C., Bob worked in a financial planning firm as an in-house estate planning counsel and spent several years in the Tax Departments of Ernst & Young, in Washington, D.C. and KPMG Peat Marwick, in Boston.   Before entering the practice of law, Bob spent seven years with GTE Government Systems as a Financial Analyst working on Department of Defense Contracts.

  • Lead attorney - Trust Reformation Marital Deduction Case, Shultz. v. Shultz, SJC-10085
  • Successfully represented an Estate in an IRS Audit challenging valuation discounts of fractional interests by persuasively arguing against several theories proffered by the IRS, which allowed the Estate to avoid a potential $600,000 assessment
  • Worked with major university to establish endowed scholarships from grants from a Private Foundation
  • Implemented Grantor Retained Annuity Trust for gifts of stock of start-up company
  • Organization of family limited liability company (FLLC) and subsequent sale using Self-Canceling Installment Notes (SCINS) to receive discounted gifts of FLLC interests to minimize estate tax and pass wealth to younger generation
  • Implementation of estate planning trusts with special provisions for disabled beneficiaries or beneficiaries receiving public assistance
  • Preparation of complex Estate Tax Return involving a private foundation, charitable remainders uni-trusts (CRUT's) and individual beneficiaries
  • Effectively interacted with individuals, families, and small business owners to develop and implement comprehensive Estate Plans
  • Successful representation of applicants at MassHealth Board of Hearings
